The Lumos Centre is “A dynamic space that inspires innovation and illuminates creativity”. It is designed to be a learning environment that connects the school with both the local and global community, both in-person and online. The design encourages students to collaborate with each other and the professional world, at the same time as showcasing the school’s achievements.
Grounded in the values of spirituality, sustainability, and scholarship, the design reflects the College’s motto: “My God in all things.” These guiding principles form an integrated design framework that shapes both the architecture and the experience of learning within.
The floor plan is zoned to support a progression of activities, reflecting the process of Design Thinking. From brainstorming to prototyping to presentation of ideas, a combination of writable surfaces, technology, and mobile furniture enables responsive, hands-on learning throughout the space. The inclusion of amenity spaces and a shared kitchen area encourages community and connection and enables other uses beyond a learning space.
Natural light plays a central role in the design. The main circulation spine and circular skylight bring daylight into the heart of the building, creating a welcoming and energising atmosphere upon entering the space. The environment provides a balance between openness and privacy, while upgraded vertical circulation ensures inclusive access across both levels.
The Lumos Logo
The project name Lumos was inspired by the patron saint of the school, St. Clare, who to this day plays a role in inspiring the young women of the College.
“Clare, a name meaning ‘shining with light’, led a life of simple focus, but her courage, determination and faith saw her achieve extraordinary things. She is an example of a strong woman whose convictions shone a light on the world…. She is a light for others to follow.”
The idea for the Lumos logo began as a simple hand-drawn sketch: a lightbulb representing light and also the spark of an idea. This logo is featured at the building’s entry, as a reminder of the power of ideas and the light we bring to one another through learning.
